Rooney, speaking at a forum sponsored by the Plumbing Foundation of the City of New York this week where I was a moderator, was adamant that no pipeline means no new gas projects. Environmentalists pressured the Cuomo Administration to at least temporarily deny permission for the pipeline. The specific issue involves a 23.5-mile underwater pipeline running mainly through New York called NESE, which would allow National Grid to pump an additional 400 million cubic feet of natural gas a day into its system. Environmentalists want to block that approach, preferring a move directly to renewable energy.
National Grid wants to be an interim step on the path to green energy, with natural gas being used to replace much worse fossil fuels like coal and oil. With the Trump Administration demolishing federal efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, states like New York are trying to fill the void. The controversy swirling around National Grid gets to the heart of how places like New York plan to confront climate change. That is sending at least some businesses into financial hell and ruining the plans of homeowners in Brooklyn, Queens and on Long Island.Īnd the 28-year veteran of the company doesn’t even get much love from people who believe in natural gas.
